When did we decide to use the word “um” to fill the gaps in our speech?

I wonder what it’s like to actually be able to hear what people are saying at your work…

I think there should be a fake recorded audience you can pull up on the internet to practice giving your speeches or presentations to. Like, it’s just a crowd or class room of people staring at you and yawning or sneezing or doing regular things people do while they watch a speech. Then when you’re practicing in the safety of your own home you can practice giving your presentation in front of this fake video audience. You can make eye contact and everything.

Good idea?
